how i set deposit limits and why it actually helped

Posting this in case it's useful to someone.

A few months back I noticed I was topping up two, three times in a session without really clocking it. Not disaster territory but the maths wasn't adding up by the end of the month.

So I set a weekly deposit limit. Most UKGC sites let you do it in the account tools, usually a daily, weekly and monthly cap. I went weekly because a daily one felt too fiddly and a monthly one was too loose for me.

The bit that matters. When you lower a limit it takes effect more or less straight away, but when you want to raise it there's a cooling-off, often 24 hours, before it kicks in. That gap is the whole point. Kills the heat-of-the-moment top up.

Honestly the limit did more for me than any amount of willpower. Anyone else use them, and weekly or monthly?

weekly here too, for the same reason. a fiver here and there adds up and you don't notice till the statement lands.

the cooling off on raising it is the clever bit isn't it. by the time the 24h has passed i've usually gone off the idea. that little wait does the job.

Fair play for posting it. Limits are the single most underused tool on these sites and they're sat right there in the account menu.

One thing I'd add. Some operators are slower than others actually showing your remaining limit on the deposit screen, so check it's reflecting before you assume it's on. I had one that took a couple of refreshes. And if a site makes the limit hard to find, that tells you something about the site.

Good thread. I run monthly rather than weekly because my play is lumpy, a quiet fortnight then a bit more around payday, so monthly suits the pattern better.

Worth pairing it with a loss limit if the site offers one, separate from deposit. Deposit caps what goes in, loss limit caps what the session can take off you regardless. Two different jobs. I find the loss one bites sooner on a bad night.

Set mine and forgot about it, which is exactly what you want. No drama, just a wall that's there when you're not thinking straight. Took two minutes to do.
